Jes' Plain Black Fo'ks, Poems

Springfield, OH: The author, nd [1913]. First edition. Small 8vo. 51 pp. Portrait frontispiece of the author. Poems written in Black dialect. "Henderson was typical of black poets in that most of his work was self-published, done up for him by job printers in his native Columbus, Ohio. Nevertheless, he had a long career as a poet, publishing five volumes of poetry between 1904 and 1915, mostly dialect works … much was drivative, stylistically and thematically … but he introduced protest subtly and often deceptively" (Bruce's Black American Writing from the Nadir, p. 109). Very good. Original gilt-stamped blue cloth (rubbed). (#7201). Item #59948
