George William Curtis (1824-1892), listed as president of the association, was a resident at Brook Farm during his early years; in 1871 he was appointed by President Grant to head a commission to reform civil service, and his work there served as the foundation for ending the patronage system of political appointments, paving the way for a more professional work force.
