VIEWS OF HOME, MEMPHIS, MO., TAKEN BY HORACE IVIE 1898 [manuscript title on card mounted to front pastedown.]

Memphis, MO, 1898. Portrait of a small town in Missouri at the turn of the 20th century. Oblong 4to photograph album, 26 photographs, each 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, mounted on 13 card-stock leaves, two to a page, rectos only. Images include the family home, a large brick residence, with interior photos of the parlor with a piano, paintings, woodwork, and scenes featuring the family members; two African-American women in a yard (pictured with hats in hand); several views of a small wooden residence; town buildings and street views, including a photograph of the Reveille Printing Office; and two panoramic views of the town from the surrounding hills. Memphis, Missouri was founded in 1843 and became the county seat of Scotland County. Several of the photographs are over-exposed, but collectively they provide a very good picture of "home" — dwellings and community. Brown cloth album with thick card-stock leaves secured by brads at the spine. (7175). Item #59230
