The Millennial Harbinger, Devoted to Primitive Christianity.; Conducted by Alexander Campbell. Co-editors: W.K. Pendleton, A.W. Campbell, Isaac Errett.

Bethany, VA: Printed and published by A. Campbell, 1861. Series V, vol. IV, nos. I-XII (this volume complete; the periodical was issued, 1830-1870). 8vo. 720 pp., plus printed wrappers for each issue and some unnumbered leaves of advertisements. The organ of the Disciples of Christ, usually including essays on theology, reviews, letters from subscribers, obituaries, advertisements for religious publications, and other relevant material; the October issue includes two philosophical articles on the Civil War, which seems to be otherwise ignored. Since Virginia seceded in April, 1861, at least the first three issues should be considered Confederate imprints (in the western panhandle above Wheeling, Bethany is located in a part of Virginia that quickly came under the control of Union troops after secession). Haynes 12223. Mott vol. II, p. 74. Not in Parrish & Willingham (which does include a Campbell title printed and published in Bethany in 1863). Widely held in institutions, but rather uncommon in trade, especially for complete volumes from the Civil War years (no copies at auction for the past 35 years, ABPC 1976-2011). Old institutional blindstamp on title page of the first issue, previous owner's bookplate and stamp on endpapers, else very good. The twelve issues bound in later black cloth, gilt spine title (dull), original printed wrappers for all twelve issues bound in (tears in several with tape repairs). (#5840). Item #58643
