Party Spirit and Popery: or, The Beast and His Rider, by an American Citizen

New York: Baker and Scribner, 1847. First edition. 12mo. (2), 126 pp. 12-page publisher's ads at rear. "From the founding of the first of the anti-Catholic societies, the American Protestant Assn. in New York in 1830, down to the recent activities of the Ku Klux Klan, scarcely a decade has passed without a revival of various charges, chief of which is the alleged incompatibility of Catholic principles with American democratic ideals" (Encyclopedia of American History). Rather uncommon anti-Catholic title published anonymously, with OCLC recording 10 copies. Lacks front endpaper, related poem clipped from a newspaper mounted opposite final page, owner's name on title page, persistent light foxing, but a very good copy. Original brown cloth, gilt title on spine. (#5828). Item #58474
