Payment for 24 qts. of milk, to E. Sayer, in a manuscript receipt from Captain E. Graves of the Clipper Ship "Tennyson," San Francisco [California], June 5th, 1867.

Receipt (approx. 20 words), measuring 13 x 19 cm., creased from folding. Some very minor loss to upper left corner of note, not affecting text. Between May 18 and June 4, Sayer supplied 24 quarts of milk to the "Tennyson" for $3.00. The receipt is signed by Sayer. Item #58372

From a local newpaper report, "The Daily Alta California," published August 21, 1867, the "Tennyson" was caught smuggling, and some 48 packages of opium were seized from her on June 18, 1867. Her captain, Edward Graves (1831-1873) was later lost at sea in the Indian Ocean, on a passage from Calcutta to Boston.
