Hillsdale, MI: [1888]. Photograph, 7 x 9 inches, picturing around 60 members of the club, men, women, and children, on the deck and roof of the clubhouse on the edge of a lake or stream, a boat visible in the foreground. Accompanied by "Steam Launch at Hillsdale, Mich." [pencil caption], a photograph, 6 x 8 1/4 inches, picturing a man in a small boat, powered by a somewhat primitive looking steam engine with a prominent boiler, cruising on a pastoral stream. Accompanied by two other photographs of the area, one picturing a stream running through a grove of tall trees with a building in the background, the other with a printed label "Toll Gate - Grand & / Highland Avenues 1888," picturing the small building with two children and a dog at the entrance, a woman driving in a horse and buggy nearby. Competitors from the Hillsdale Rowing Club were quite competitive nationally in the 1880s, placing well in a number of major championships. The first photograph has a vertical crease, with some loss through erosion, all are somewhat faded; the mounts are worn around the edges and soiled. The photographs are mounted on both side of two stiff cards. (#4805). Item #58019
