THE TENNESSEE HANdBOOK AND IMMIGRANT'S GUIDE Giving a description of the state of Tennessee, its agricultural and mineralogical character, railroads, etc.

Philadelphia, (PA): J.B. Lipincott & Co. 1868. First edition. 12mo. (4), 164 pp. Folding map. On the front endpaper inscribed, "To the President of the United States with the respects and kind regards of the author." With an 1867 copyright and close ties to his fellow Tennessean and Union supporter Andrew Johnson, it seems likely he was the intended recipient; U.S. Grant was elected in late 1868, but didn't assume office until March, 1869. Sabin 6177. Clark New South I, 26: "An official, accurate, and valuable survey if the state." Allen More Tennessee Rarities 73: "Although the NUC locates twenty libraries with copies of this book, it is quite scarce today." Very good. Original purple cloth (a little old staining to front board, spine faded), gilt spine title. (#6189). Item #57874
