Anaya (1795-1854) was interim President of Mexico from April 2 – May 20, 1847, and again from November 13, 1847 – January 8, 1848, assuming office in the midst of the Mexican-American War. In this speech, given the day after his first appointment as interim president, he calls on his countrymen to rally to defeat the invader, saying he is prepared to take on the office thrust upon him under such difficult circumstances.
