Small 8vo. xxiii, 223 pp. Tipped-in at the front is a two-page autograph letter from French writer and politician Benjamin Constant, dated 8 August 1825, to the poet Maurice de Guerin; Constant (1767-1830) was a French political philosopher and intimate of Madame de Stael who published a single novel, "Adolphe," a work in the sentimental tradition about a young man's disastrous love affair with an older mistress. Fine copy. Somewhat later green polished calf, gilt, gilt rules framing boards, spine richly gilt with ornaments and rules between raised bands, leather spine label, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., by Rivière.
