First edition in French (published in London the previous year as "An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the times"). 8vo. xii, 242 pp. A treatise on the social conditions and ethics of mid-18th century Great Britain; the title went through a number of editions in 1757 and 1758 and was printed in Boston in the latter year. Lowndes "This work on its first publication excited uncommon attention, and ran through seven editions in one year." CBEL II, p. 461. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of the Dublin, 1757, edition (Sowerby 2716: "The author, known as 'Estimate Brown,' was a native of Northumberland"). Some rubbing, but an attractive copy. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt ornaments and morocco spine label between raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers, all edges red. (#4409). Item #57247
