Original pen-and-ink drawing, 12 x 9 3/4 inches, signed by the illustrator in the lower left corner, "H. Thomson 07," with various shades of blue, brown, yellow, and flesh-tone wash coloring. Pictured as a full-color plate (as in this drawing, but not as vibrant) opposite page 238 in "Silas Marner" by George Elliot (London: Macmillan, 1907; "With illustrations by Hugh Thomson"). "His drawings showed a delightful skill in landscape work ... all of [his illustrated books] he showed a fine appreciation of thee author's point of view, together with much character and imagination of his own ... being usually called upon for pictures of the dainty graces and foibles of seventeenth and eighteenth century and early Victorian society ... he destroyed much of his work as soon as drawn" (DNB).
