Item #56099 Ordinances of the Corporation of Morgantown, with the Charter Annexed

Ordinances of the Corporation of Morgantown, with the Charter Annexed

Morgantown, (VA): Virginia Weekly Star office, 1861. First edition. 8vo. 16 pp. First public printing of the revised (1860) charter, with four pages of newly drafted municipal laws regulating gambling, maintenance of privies, selling on the Sabbath, keeping of hogs, detonation of fire-crackers, etc. The first printing of the municipal code for Morgantown. Though the settlement was founded in 1778, and officially incorporated by the Virginia Assembly in 1838, there appears to have been no formal governmental structure, or municipal code, put in place until the adoption of the revised charter printed herein. Not in Parrish & Willingham (though the printing may pre-date Virginia's April, 1861, secession from the Union). OCLC locates three copies (Harvard Law, Duke, Library of Virginia). Original plain gray wrappers (somewhat soiled). Very good. (2465). Item #56099
