Light foxing and soil, engraved bookplate of M.P.J. Besnard (1741-1808), "Architecte a Rennes", signed by engraver A. Ollivault; on an endpaper in a Besnard ownership signature, dated 1694, which, if accurate, would place the printing early in the 1690s. Item #55904

A collection of designs for seven chateaux and the Chapelle de Port-Royal by Le Pautre, a prominent architect of the age of Mansart and Le Vau. Brunet and Graesse noted a first edition comprising plates only and then a second edition introducing the descriptive text, which they attributed to A.-C. d'Aviler. Berlin Kat. (Katalog des ornamentstichsammlung der Staatlichen Kunstbibliothek) 2375. Fowler Architectural Collection 181, clearly differentiating the third edition with Jombert at Rue St. Jacques, which premises he occupied 1691-1737. Despite wear, a handsome volume. (2410).
