Almanach et directorium français des États-Unis, pour l'anné 1857: à l'usage des populations françaises de l'Amerique du Nord.

New York: Publié par le Dr. Zender (D. Fanshaw, imprimeur), [1856]. The tenth annual edition (issued 1847-1868). 12mo. 154 pp. Street plans for lower Manhattan and for the village of Zenderville, N.J.; ads for local businesses, especially for patent medicines (Dr. Jayne's and others). Joachim Denis Laurent Zender (b. 1805, see Appleton's), emigrated to the United States as a Catholic missionary in 1828 but studied medicine and was ordained a Congregational minister, thence pursuing his religious work, publishing, medicine and phrenology, and, based on the prospectus with map in this volume, apparently attempted to establish "Zenderville," New Jersey, near Hoboken. OCLC notes seven locations for the general title, but none seem to hold this issue (Columbia, Fordham, New York Public, New York Historical Society, Yale, Boston College, Biblio/Archives Quebec). Original purple cloth, gilt spine title. Very good, crisp copy. (1800). Item #54780
