Shakers near Lebanon State of N York. Their Mode of Worship. Drawn from Life.

N.p. n.p., nd [ca. 1830]. Stipple line engraving, hand colored in browns and blues; image 8 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches, on a sheet 14 x 16 inches. While it bears no indication of artist, engraver, or publisher, it is the version thought by scholar Robert P. Emlen likely to be the first among some 18 versions of this scene that appeared during the 19th century. Its technique, caption, barrel-vaulted ceiling, treeless windows, and visitors' clothing match that one. There was considerable fascination with Shaker ways at the time, and this was the first published image showing a facet of Shaker life. It remained as popular as any, but, despite that, it is surprisingly scarce. See Emlen's "The Shaker Dance Prints," in Imprint, v. 17, no. 2, autumn 1992. A very good copy with wide margins, removed from board by a paper restorer, washed, and reinforced; paper slightly darkened and rubbed in the margins. (581). Item #54666
