The original typescript for the book. 4to. 147 pp., plus five leaves inserted in the text [all rectos only], a transcript of Wilson's Civil War diaries and letters, with a prologue and editorial notes by Summers, as published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 1962; included here is the typescript for the text of the book from the first page of the prologue through four appendices, with markings toward publication by an editor at the press. Some soiling and staining, but very good. Item #53788

Wilson (1843-1900; U.S. House of Representatives, 1883-1895, Postmaster General of the United States, 1895-1897, President of Washington & Lee University, 1896-1900), a native of Jefferson County, Virginia, enlisted in the 12th Virginia Cavalry in early 1862 and served with that unit as a private through Appomattox, serving under Ashby, Gumble Jones, Lomax, and Rosser, and participating in Jackson's famous Shenandoah Valley campaign, April-June, 1862, the battles at Brandy Station, the Wildnerness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Cold Harbor, Early's Shenandoah Valley campaign in the summer of 1864, and the Petersburg-Appomattox campaign._"The memoirs of a youthful but intelligent member of the 12th Virginia Cavalry; Wilson occasionally broke his short, daily entries to comment at length on persons and events" (Nevins I, p. 180). The original diaries and papers presented in this book are held at Washington & Lee University.
