Forwarding mementoes fashioned from pieces of the destroyed Union ships Cumberland and Congress [not present] and sending news of picket duty in two autograph letters signed, 7 March 1863 and 14 April 1865, from Newport News and Richmond, Virginia, to "My Dear Wife" in Norwich, Connecticut.

8vo and 4to. Four pages, approximately 550 words. McKinney was serving with the 21st Connecticut Infantry; the letters are accompanied by a cabinet photograph of Mrs. McKinney, an 1866 life insurance policy taken on McKinney's brother Hezekiah, a letter-sheet lithograph view "Maj. Gen. Peck's Headquarters at Suffolk, Va." (Washington, DC: Bohn, c1865; 4 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches; part of an autograph letter on verso), and a partly printed document, completed in manuscript 9 February, 1865, a pass (3 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches) for "Mr. Quinn" to travel from Norfolk, Virginia, to Newberne, North Carolina.
