[Printed letter to Gen. George H. Thomas, with other letters by Thomas and General W.B. Franklin].

[Washington, DC? U.S. War Department?], 1870. First edition (?). 4to. 2 pp., printed on the rectos of two integral leaves. Yet another volley in the Fitz John Porter Court Martial controversy that dragged on for a quarter century after Porter was cashiered for malfeasance in command of his corps at Second Manassas; Porter proclaimed his innocence throughout the imbroglio and was finally cleared and returned to the army rolls in 1886. Here Pope and Thomas wrangle over a letter by Franklin informing General U.S. Grant, in 1868 Secretary of War, that he and Thomas would testify that they could not believe any Pope testimony, apparently without consulting Thomas.
