North Carolina Argus; C.W. Fenton, editor.

Wadesboro, NC, 15 August 1861. [this issue only]. Broadsheet double-folio, each side printed in four columns. Includes several reports from soldiers in the Anson Guards, stationed at the time in southeastern Virginia, the full text of a long speech from Alexander Stephens, and three columns of ads verso. Editor’s note: “We are out of paper and destitute for help.” OCLC locates 16 runs of the Argus, published in Wadesboro and Fayetteville, 1848-1876, but most seem to be microform copies; none of those who report hard copies seem to hold this issue. American Antiquarian Society holds two issues, one from 1852 and one from 1876. Accompanied by a fragment (less than half the issue) of The Iredell Express, Statesville, N. C., April 24, 1862. Poor quality paper frayed along right edge and uniformly browned, but text is complete in the Argus. A rare survival. Item #50846
