A history of the Holyoke Canoe Club, 1888-1938, as documented in a club scrapbook maintained by two early leaders of the club, "Commodores" Frank H. Metcalf and John M. Jones, signed by them on the front pastedown.

The scrapbook contains a 4-page typescript copy of an 1898 history of the club and early printed club ephemera, among them three constitutions (1890, 1904, 1922); three prospectuses (1900, 1901, and 1902); invitations and announcements for regattas, cruises, dances, dinners, a circus, and other amusements, etc.; newspaper clippings; photographs of the several clubhouses, the club's 1905 baseball team, and the inundated club grounds during the 1938 flood; postcards and other material. These total 70 printed items, 20 photographs, five postcards, and a host of newspaper accounts of club activities. We failed to locate any of the club's printed material on OCLC. Some pieces have loosened from the scrapbook pages, some of the old paper is brittle and chipped. The volume's leather spine is completely eroded and the marbled boards are very rubbed and worn. Still it embraces an excellent record of this western Massachusetts social club and its activities mostly upon the lovely Connecticut River. Item #50375
