Hewitt is "chiefly known by her poetical contributions to periodicals" (Appleton's). She edited a gift-book entitled The Gem of the Western World (New York, 1850), a book of biographical sketches Heroines of History (New York, 1856) and a poetry anthology Poems, Sacred, Passionate, and Legendary (New York, 1864). She also provided lyrics for a number of popular mid-century songs.
