Congratulating William Pennington on his election as Speaker of the House of Representatives, an autograph letter, signed 2 February 1860, from Truman Woodruff of St. Louis.

4to. 1-page, approximately 125 words. Folded, but very good. Item #46571

An excellent political letter from a partisan Missouri Republican, in full: "We Republicans of this city congratulate you in your success in being elected Speaker - give us your hand! I am personally a stranger to you, but by reputation I know you well; my object in addressing you at this time is, to say I hope you will in your new position do all that lays in your power to consolidate and give prominence to the Republican Party - which party we republicans of Missouri think ere long will be the party of the country. I say in the words of [unintelligible] - 'reward your friends and punish your enemies' - What made old Genl. Jackson as popular among the people was he would veto his enemies to the gratification of friends. I have always been one of the Democracy and continued so until it all ran into Niggerism. I am now a Democratic Republican." Pennington (1796-1862) served in various New Jersey political positions and as governor of the Minnesota Territory.
