In part: "They may have been burnt … All my own books and papers were boxed up and were burnt in a large fire which took place in a fire at Memphis almost a year ago." Accompanied by an earlier letter from William A. Goodwyn of Memphis, to Stewart, suggesting that the records might have burnt in a fire and that he might write Stanton for confirmation.
