Berret resigned his post as Chief Clerk of the Pension Office in order to commence business in the city of Washington, as prosecutor for claims on Mexican Bounty Lands, claims on account of service in the War with Mexico, etc. Fees are stated and references given.
Berret eventually became Mayor of Washington, DC from 1858-1861, but was briefly imprisoned at Fort Lafayette in New York harbor for failure to take the loyalty oath during the Civil War, and resigned as mayor.
