Jones and Hatch both served as junior officers in the Mexican War and on the frontier. Jones commanded a cavalry regiment under Stuart, received his promotion to brigadier general in September, 1862, and was killed leading his men at Piedmont in June, 1864; Hatch was given command of Banks's cavalry in the Shenandoah campaign of 1862 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at South Mountain.
