Cushing "stands out, because of his industry, his scholarship, and his versatility as one of the most picturesque and talented figures of the nineteenth century" (DAB). The person to whom he directed this letter is most probably William H. Fowle (1808-1869), a prominent Alexandria [VA] merchant.
