DREAM OF A FREE-TRADE PARADISE, AND OTHER SKETCHES. With 12 Illustrations of Henry L. Stephens.

Philadelphia, [PA]: Published for the Industrial League by Henry Carey Baird, Industrial Publisher, 406 Walnut St. 1872. First collected edition. 8vo. 24cm. 96pp. Pink printed wraps. Spine ends have been reinforced with tape. Corner torn on frontispiece no loss to image. These are satirical stories done to show the folly of laissez-faire policy. Elder was a lawyer from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, represented Cambria Iron Works, and later owned part of it. Somewhat famous for declaring that no one had been worried about the dam that caused the Johnstown flood before it broke, though he lost his wife and child in it. He was secretary of the Industrial League for a number of years which had been founded by Joseph Wharton primarily to better focus on lobbying for American industry and workers rights. Elder was a strong supporter of Henry Carey's economic ideas. Item #64495
