William and John Pendleton were the pioneer lithographers in Boston. John Bufford was one of their apprentices. Thomas Moore, the Pendleton's bookkeeper, acquired the firm in 1835 and began using "touches of color" as early as 1839 in his lithographed sheet music covers and gift book illustrations, according to Jay Last's book "The Color Explosion: Nineteenth-Century American Lithography," (Santa Ana, CA: 2005). His successor Benjamin Thayer continued to use and refine color lithography in his shop. Thayer's firm is considered one of the first American color lithographers, producing "work from multiple stones as early as 1843 or 1844."
Only one of these pieces of sheet music listed in Dichter & Shapiro's "Early American Sheet Music, Its Lure and Its Lore 1768-1889" [Bowker: 1941]: an earlier printing of "City Guards Quick Step," (1835).
