First edition. 8vo. ix, 647 pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author, in-text plan. 75 pages at the end of the text list the Marion County Confederate soldiers, with notes concerning those killed or wounded, held prisoner, etc. Inscribed at the head of the title page "Jno. P. Thomas / Dec. 23, 1904 -- in exchange / from Jno. C. Sellers." John Peyre Thomas (1833-1912) led a battalion of state military academy students in a number of engagements during the Civil War, served as superintendent of the Citadel, 1882-1885, and wrote the standard history of the institution (published 1893); John C. Sellers was the son of the author. Howes S-276. Owner's name stamp ("Albert Sidney Thomas," son of John P. Thomas) on pastedown, title page a bit askew from an inelegant front joint repair, but a good solid copy with a nice South Carolina association. Original purple cloth (rubbed), gilt spine title.
