Dr. Melchior, a Defeated Enemy & My Early Beliefs. Introduced by David Garnett.
KEYNES, J.M.

London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1949. Proof copy of this first edition. 8vo. 103 pp. Inscribed by Garnett on the front endpaper "Maria Curtin from David Garnett / This unexpurgated proof contains passages omitted lest personal feelings be hurt (in the case of Lady Reading) or libel actions invoked. Contrariwise it lacks the index." Accompanied by a proof of the second edition of Keynes's Essays in Biography (London: Hart-Davis, 1951, with three essays not in the first; originally published in 1933). Original plain tan wrappers (edgewear, some spine erosion, spines cocked), printed paper labels on upper wrappers (a little chipped, not affecting text). Good copies in a scarce format. Dr. Melchior "provides an extremely clear analysis of the characters and lives of the men responsible for continuing the food-blockade of Germany in 1919 for months after the signing of the Armistice" (preface). The deleted passages include disparaging remarks made about Lord Reading's character. The Essays in Biography contains primarily important political figures and economists. Though common books in their published versions, we have been unable to locate other copies of these proofs. (1491) (Item ID: 54510)
