In 1821 President James Monroe approved the congressional charter establishing Columbian College in the District of Columbia, on a hill now known as Meridian Hill. The first commencement was in 1824. In 1873 Columbian College became the Columbian University and moved to 15th and H Streets, NW. In 1904 the University changed its name to The George Washington University in an agreement with the George Washington Memorial Association. The University moved to its current Foggy Bottom location in 1912.
