Hewitt (1931-2003) had a long career in Washington, DC, first as a speech writer for John F. Kennedy and an assistant to U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, later as the driving force behind the reinvigoration of Ford's Theatre where she served as producing artisitic director; on the day before her death, she received the National Humanities Award.
