This is the principal and most important work of Las Casas, was completed in 1542. Las Casas had voyaged with Columbus in 1498 and again in 1502 to the West Indies, spending much time as an observer to the barbarities the Spanish inflicted on the natives. Ordained a priest in the West Indies in 1510, he was tireless in his campaign to improve the lot of the natives and convert Spanish sensibilities. This narrative chronicles many atrocities and offers proposals to prevent what he termed "the further Ruin of the West Indies." This is enlarged from the 1697 ed. SABIN 11274 SERVIES 233 STREETER 46
